Common seadragon

The common seadragon is a beautiful marine fish.

It is a relative of the seahorse and the pipefish. These fish belong to a group called Syngnathiformes. Adult seadragons often show reddish colors with yellow and purple stripes. They have small parts on their bodies that look like seaweed. These leaf-like shapes help them hide from hungry predators. This special way of hiding is called camouflage. The common seadragon is even the marine emblem for Victoria, Australia.

These fish have a very interesting way of living. They move slowly through the water near rocky reefs and seagrass. Unlike many seahorses, they do not have a tail to grab onto things. Instead, they simply drift among the kelp and seaweed. They use a long, tubular snout to find food. They do not have teeth in their jaws. They suck up tiny creatures like small crustaceans at lightning speed. Small fins on their neck and back help them keep their balance.

Life for a seadragon involves a lot of teamwork. In this species, the males are the ones who care for the babies. A female lays about 120 eggs on a special patch on the male's tail. The male carries these eggs for about one month. Once the eggs hatch, the young fish are independent. They can start eating food right away. It takes about 28 months for a seadragon to grow up. They can live for as long as six years.

Scientists have worked hard to learn how to help these fish. Breeding them in tanks is a very hard job. Many aquariums, like the Melbourne Aquarium, have found success. In 2015, researchers changed the light and water flow to help. This led to many healthy babies being born in December 2015. Other places like the Georgia Aquarium and Monterey Bay Aquarium have also helped. In early 2023, the Birch Aquarium successfully hatched young seadragons.

Today, we must be careful to protect the seadragon's home. They are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. This means they might be at risk of disappearing. Their main problem is the loss of seagrass and seaweed. Pollution and changes in ocean temperature also make life hard. People use a tool called 'Dragon Search' to report where they see them. This helps scientists track the population. Protecting the ocean helps keep these amazing creatures safe for a long time.
