Commodity

A commodity is a special kind of good used in trade. Most commodities are raw materials or basic resources. These items are often called "fungible." This means one item is seen as the same as another. It does not matter who produced the item. For example, one bag of wheat looks like any other bag.

Because they are so similar, people usually buy them based on price. They do not look for a famous brand name. This makes the profit for sellers often quite small.

There are different ways to group these goods. Some people call them "soft" or "hard" commodities. Soft commodities are things that are grown, like rice or corn. Hard commodities are things that are mined, like gold or silver. Some goods are used for energy. These include coal, gas, and oil. Electricity is also an energy commodity. It is unique because it is hard to store. It must be used as soon as it is made.

People have studied how these goods work for a long time. The word commodity comes from the French word "commodité." This word means something that is useful or convenient. In the 15th century, English speakers began using the word. Long ago, thinkers like Adam Smith and David Ricardo studied value. They looked at how much work went into making goods. Karl Marx also wrote about how commodities are exchanged in a market. He noted that you cannot tell who grew wheat just by tasting it.

Many places around the world have special markets for trading. These are called commodity exchanges. Some famous ones include the Chicago Board of Trade. There is also the London Metal Exchange. Other examples are the Dalian Commodity Exchange and the New York Mercantile Exchange.

These markets help find a fair price for everyone. They react quickly when the supply of a good changes. Investors also use these markets to help manage their money.

Sometimes, a regular product can become a commodity. This process is called "commoditization." It happens when a product becomes very easy to make. At first, a product might be very special or expensive. Later, many companies make it, and it becomes basic. For instance, computer memory and some medicines are now commodities. Even multivitamins can be seen this way. A person might buy a calcium tablet based only on the price.
