This title has a very long history. It comes from a Roman word called "Imperator." That word was used in the Roman Kingdom and Empire. In English, the term became common during the English Civil War. In 1642, a record shows the title used for a fleet leader. Today, many heads of state still hold this power. They might lead through a special group of advisors.

Many nations have specific rules for this role. In Argentina, the president is the commander-in-chief of all armed forces. The president can also give out high military jobs. In Belarus, the president wears a special military uniform. This uniform shows their rank during official ceremonies. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, a group of leaders shares the role. They lead during peace but use a chief of staff during war.

This job connects to how governments work. In a parliamentary system, the leaders depend on a legislature. The legislature does not give direct orders to the military. In Canada, the power belongs to the monarch. The governor general uses the title commander-in-chief there. They often act on the advice of a prime minister. This helps the country manage its defense in a steady way.
