Yuji Hyakutake was an amateur astronomer. He used powerful binoculars to scan the sky. He was surprised to find this comet. It was his second discovery in just a few weeks!

This comet was very bright. It was called the Great Comet of 1996. It flew very close to Earth in March.

People all over the world could see it. The comet looked blue-green in the night sky. It had a very long tail. One tail was 80 degrees wide. That is a huge part of the sky!

Scientists learned many new things from it. It was the first comet seen giving off X-rays. X-rays are a type of light we cannot see.

A spacecraft named Ulysses even flew through the comet's tail. This showed the tail was at least 570 million kilometers long.

Hyakutake is a long-period comet. This means it takes a long time to orbit the Sun. It will not return for 70,000 years.
