At Chichen Itza, columns were used to create colonnaded halls for elite administration and gallery-patios to widen interior spaces. Some columns in the Group of the Thousand Columns were even painted with red, yellow, and blue registers.
Beyond simple support, columns play a role in modern engineering and aesthetics. In contemporary wind or earthquake engineering, columns are designed to resist lateral forces, which are sideways pressures. They remain a central tool for architects to manage weight and movement. During the Renaissance, architects studied these ancient forms to revive classical beauty. This study influenced the Baroque, Rococo, and Neo-classical movements. Whether used for strength or as a decorative colonnade, the column remains a symbol of architectural stability and history.
