A colony is a land ruled by a far away place. The rulers are called colonizers. They are often separate from the people living in the colony.

The word "colony" comes from an old Latin word. It meant a farmer or someone who works the land. Long ago, the Romans built colonies. They often built cities with a grid pattern of streets. Some cities like Cologne still have this history.

Between the 15th and 20th centuries, many European states had colonies. They often set them up to trade or to live there. Sometimes, colonies were used to take resources from the land. This was often unfair to the local people. For example, the British had a colony in Jamaica. This colony was part of the Atlantic slave trade.

Many colonies have changed over time. Some became independent. This means they can rule themselves. Ghana was the first African colony south of the Sahara to become free. Other places, like Puerto Rico, are still not fully self-governed. They are called dependent territories.
