She was also a mime, an actress, and a journalist. Many people know her best for her 1944 book called Gigi. This story was later made into a famous movie and a stage play. She was a very busy person who loved to create. Her work helped many people understand life and love in France. She remains a very important voice in the history of women's writing.

Colette's writing often came from her own life experiences.

Early on, she wrote the four Claudine stories. These books followed a girl named Claudine from a small village to Paris. At first, these books appeared under her husband's name, Willy. He even made her stay in her room to finish them. Later, she wrote many other books about marriage and love. She used her own memories to make her stories feel real.

Colette was born on January 28, 1873, in a village called Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye.

Her father was a war hero named Captain Jules-Joseph Colette. Her mother was named Adèle Eugénie Sidonie, but people called her Sido. Colette went to public school from age 6 until she was 17. Her family was once wealthy, but they lost much of their money. She learned to be very strong during these hard times.

She had a very long and busy career.

In the 1910s, she worked as a reporter for newspapers. She wrote about fashion, theater, and even crime scenes. She said a reporter must see things to truly understand them. By the 1920s, she was a very famous and successful writer. She even won the title of President of the Académie Goncourt in 1949. She published over 1,200 articles during her life.

Colette's life changed many times through her many marriages. She married Henry Gauthier-Villars in 1893 and Henry de Jouvenel in 1912. Her final husband was Maurice Goudeket, whom she married in 1925. She lived through the difficult years of the German occupation in France. Even when she was old and had arthritis, she kept writing. When she died in 1954, she received a state funeral.
