The other kind lives near Indonesia. These fish are called lobe-finned fish. This means they have thick fins with strong parts inside. They are close relatives to land animals like birds and mammals.

Coelacanths have many special parts. They have eight fins in total. Their body is covered in thick scales. These scales act like armor to protect them. They also have a special joint in their skull. This joint is called an intracranial joint. It helps them open their mouths very wide. Some old coelacanths were even bigger than humans!

These fish belong to a group called the Actinistia. They are known as lobe-finned fish. This means their fins have thick, fleshy parts. Because of this, they are more like lungfish or even land animals. They are closely related to tetrapods. Tetrapods include living things like amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Scientists find them fascinating because they look very old. People often call them "living fossils." This is because they look similar to fossils from a long time ago. They help us learn how life changed over millions of years.

Coelacanths have several unique ways of working.

They have eight fins in total. These include two dorsal fins and two pectoral fins. They also have two pelvic fins, one anal fin, and one caudal fin. Their tail is very special and is called a trilobate fin. This means the tail has three lobes. Their body is covered in thick scales called ctenoid elasmoid scales. These scales act like a suit of armor for the fish. Inside their head, they have an intracranial joint. This is a hinge at the back of the skull. It lets the coelacanth open its mouth extremely wide.

Finding a living coelacanth was a huge surprise.

For a long time, people thought they were extinct. They believed these fish died out 66 million years ago. But on December 22, 1938, everything changed. A museum curator named Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer found a specimen. She found it in the catch of a local fisherman. The fish was found off the coast of South Africa. She sent drawings to a scientist named J. L. B. Smith. He sent a famous cable to confirm the discovery. He said it was the "Most Important Preserve Skeleton and Gills = Fish Described."

There are two main types of living coelacanths today.

The first is the West Indian Ocean coelacanth. This species lives near the coast of South Africa. It is also found around the Comoro Islands. Scientists found specimens in the Comoros in December 1952. The second type is the Indonesian coelacanth.

Mark V. Erdmann and his wife found this fish in 1997. They saw it at a fish market in Manado. This species lives in the seas of Eastern Indonesia. It can be found from Manado all the way to Papua.

Their fossils go back more than 410 million years. This was during the Devonian period. Some ancient versions were much larger than the fish we see today. The genus Mawsonia was one of the largest bony fishes ever. They lived in many places like Europe and Australia. Some lived in salt water, while others lived in fresh water. Even though they look old, they are still changing. Studying them helps us see how life connects the ocean to the land.

Unlike most fish that have thin, bony rays in their fins, coelacanths belong to the group Sarcopterygii. This means they have thick, fleshy lobes attached to their fins. Because of this unique anatomy, they are more closely related to lungfish and tetrapods than to common ray-finned fish. Tetrapods are the terrestrial vertebrates that include living amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Studying these fish helps scientists understand the evolutionary links between aquatic life and land animals.

Coelacanths possess several specialized physical mechanisms that set them apart from other fish.

They have a total of eight fins: two dorsal fins, two pectoral fins, two pelvic fins, one anal fin, and one caudal fin. Their tail is a distinct structure known as a trilobate fin, or a diphycercal tail, which features three lobes. This tail includes a secondary lobe that extends past the primary one. To protect their bodies, they are covered in ctenoid elasmoid scales that function like thick armor. Internally, they possess an intracranial joint, which is a hinge at the back of the skull. This joint allows the fish to open its mouth to an extremely wide degree. They also retain an oil-filled notochord, a pressurized tube that most other vertebrates replace with a vertebral column during development.

There are currently two living species of coelacanth, both belonging to the genus Latimeria.

The first is the West Indian Ocean coelacanth, known scientifically as Latimeria chalumnae. This species inhabits the seas around South Africa and the Comoro Islands. Between 1938 and 1975, scientists recorded 84 specimens of this species. The second living species is the Indonesian coelacanth, or Latimeria menadoensis.

While many people call the modern coelacanth a "living fossil" because its body plan has remained similar for 400 million years, recent studies suggest their history was more complex. Fossil evidence shows that their body shapes and ecological niches were actually much more diverse in the past than previously believed.

Understanding the coelacanth connects us to the deep history of biological evolution. By examining the transition from the lobe-finned fish of the Devonian to the tetrapods of today, scientists gain insight into how life moved from water to land. The discovery of the two extant Latimeria species reminds us that much of the ocean's history remains to be fully explored.
