Historians call his collection of lands the North Sea Empire. This empire included England, Denmark, and Norway. Cnut ruled England starting in 1016. He became King of Denmark in 1018. Later, he claimed the throne of Norway in 1028. His rule brought these different regions under one central authority.

Cnut achieved his power through military strength and careful politics. He was a Danish prince and the son of King Swein Forkbeard. His family line was central to the unification of Denmark. His grandfather, Harald Bluetooth, was one of the first Scandinavian kings to accept Christianity. Cnut's mother is a subject of debate among historians. Some sources say she was a Polish princess named Świętosława. Other Norse sagas suggest she was a Swedish queen.

To conquer England, Cnut organized a massive maritime invasion. In the summer of 1015, his fleet set sail for the English coast. The force consisted of about 10,000 men. These soldiers traveled in 200 longships. Most of these men were mercenaries, which are soldiers hired to fight.

This invasion led to fourteen months of intense conflict. Cnut fought primarily against Edmund Ironside, the son of King Æthelred. The fighting moved through many areas, including Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria.

Cnut's success relied on winning over important leaders and allies. During the invasion, Eadric Streona, the Ealdorman of Mercia, joined Cnut's side. He brought 40 ships and their crews with him. Another important figure was Thorkell the Tall, a famous Jomsviking chief. Thorkell had previously pledged allegiance to the English but switched to Cnut. These shifts in loyalty helped Cnut gain control over more territory. Eventually, the English nobility and leaders were forced to submit to his rule.

Once in power, Cnut worked to unite his diverse subjects. He used cultural bonds like wealth and shared customs to connect the Danes and the English. He also used his religious influence to increase his prestige. Cnut held authority over important church districts, or dioceses, in both England and Denmark. This gave him leverage with the great leaders of the Christian world. He even secured concessions regarding the costs and travels of his bishops.

Cnut's legacy is studied by historians to understand medieval kingship. The historian Norman Cantor called him the most effective king in Anglo-Saxon history. He is also remembered through popular legends, such as the story of King Canute and the tide. His life shows how military conquest can lead to the creation of complex, multi-national empires. Cnut ruled his vast territories until his death on 12 November 1035.
