Cloud computing

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cloud computing is a way to use computer tools over the internet. Instead of relying on just one machine, people use a huge group of shared resources.

This group of tools is often called "the cloud." The International Organization for Standardization defines it as a way to access a pool of resources. These resources can be physical or virtual. This setup lets people get what they need whenever they want it. It is a very important part of how our modern digital world works.

There are five main ways the cloud works. First, it uses on-demand self-service. This means a person can get more storage or server time automatically. They do not need to talk to a person to make it happen. Second, it offers broad network access. You can use the cloud on phones, tablets, or laptops. Third, it uses resource pooling. This is when many people share the same group of tools.

Fourth, it has rapid elasticity. This allows the system to grow or shrink very quickly based on demand. Finally, it uses measured service. The system tracks how much you use, like a meter on a water pipe.

The idea of the cloud has a long history. It started with ideas about time-sharing in the 1960s. During that time, people used a model called a data center. In 1994, a company called General Magic used the "cloud" metaphor. A specialist named David Hoffman is credited with this idea. In 1996, Compaq Computer Corporation used the term in a business plan. They thought online file storage would be a big success.

This helped lead to the cloud services we use today.

Many big companies helped build the cloud we know. Amazon Web Services, or AWS, started in 2002. They released Amazon S3 and EC2 in 2006. In 2008, NASA helped develop open-source software for clouds. Microsoft launched Microsoft Azure in 2010. Other companies like IBM and Oracle joined in later.

In 2019, Amazon launched AWS Outposts to help customers. These different tools allow developers to build things independently.

Cloud computing connects to many things you might already use. It helps people work from anywhere with an internet connection. It also helps businesses save money on big machines. Instead of buying expensive hardware, they pay for what they use.

This is called an operational expenditure model. However, using the cloud can also be a hard job. Some people find it difficult to manage costs or keep data safe. Many organizations now use a hybrid cloud to get the best of both worlds.
