A clock generator is an electronic tool. It makes a clock signal. This signal helps parts in a circuit work together.

All clock generators have two main parts. One part is a resonant circuit. This part makes the signal. It often uses a quartz piezo-electric oscillator. The second part is an amplifier. This part makes the signal stronger. It feeds some power back to the first part. This keeps the signal going.

Some generators have extra parts. A frequency divider can change the signal speed. A multiplier can make the signal faster. Some generators are programmable. This means you can change the speed without new parts. In a computer, the BIOS sets this speed.

Some large networks use timing-signal generators. These are called TSGs. They take in timing signals. Then they make new signals for other machines. This keeps big networks in sync. A TSG has many parts. It has an interface to take in signals. It also has a part to watch the signal. This part is called performance-monitoring. It checks if the timing is good.
