Sinclair worked by finding ways to make electronics much smaller. In 1972, he created the Sinclair Executive pocket calculator. This device was very slim compared to other calculators. Later, he focused on making home computers that were cheap. He wanted to beat high prices from American and Japanese companies. He did this by using inexpensive microprocessors in his designs. This allowed more people to own a computer at home. 
Sinclair's journey began with a strong family history in engineering. His father and grandfather were both engineers at a company called Vickers. Clive was born in Ealing, Middlesex, in July 1940. During World War II, he and his mother moved to Devon for safety. He was very good at math while attending school. Even as a young student, he earned money by mowing lawns. He also wrote his first articles about electronics while still in school.
Many of his big ideas happened through his companies. He started Sinclair Radionics Ltd in 1961. This company made things like the Black Watch wristwatch in 1975. 
Not every invention that Sinclair made was a big success. He created the C5, which was a battery-powered electric vehicle.

His grandfather, George Sinclair, was a naval architect who successfully developed the paravane. This device was used for mine sweeping. Clive was born in Ealing, Middlesex, on 30 July 1940. During World War II, he and his mother moved to Devon for safety. While at school, Sinclair excelled in mathematics. He even earned money by mowing lawns and washing dishes to support himself.
In 1961, he registered Sinclair Radionics Ltd. He initially struggled to find startup capital to buy components and advertise. To gain experience, he worked as an assistant editor for the publication Instrument Practice. This role gave him access to thousands of devices from 36 different manufacturers. He used this knowledge to design miniature radios powered by hearing aid cells. By the late 1960s, Sinclair Radionics produced handheld calculators, miniature televisions, and digital watches. One notable product was the Black Watch wristwatch, launched in 1975. 
The Black Watch became a significant commercial failure for the company. The watch was inaccurate and very difficult to service. Additionally, its battery life was too short for users. These difficulties led to financial losses for Sinclair Radionics. In 1976, the National Enterprise Board bought a 43% interest in the company. However, the board eventually decided to break up the company in 1979. This dissolution forced Sinclair to leave the firm with an estimated £10,000 package.
Following this, Sinclair focused on Sinclair Research Ltd to develop more advanced computers. He hired Jim Westwood to begin the ZX80 project in 1979. The ZX80 was a major success and helped establish his brand in the UK and the US. In 1982, he launched the ZX Spectrum. 
Despite his successes, Sinclair faced several other commercial setbacks. He developed the C5, a battery-powered electric vehicle. 

Sinclair's legacy is tied to the democratization of technology. By utilizing inexpensive microprocessors, he brought computing power into the homes of ordinary people. His efforts helped create a foundation for the modern digital age. His work influenced how electronics were designed and sold to the public. Even his failures provided lessons for the evolving tech industry. He remains a central figure in the history of British innovation.
