Building a modern wall involves many careful steps. Most walls use thick multiplex boards made of wood. These boards have many holes drilled into them. Inside each hole, a metal part called a T-nut is placed. This allows climbers to screw modular holds onto the wall easily.

The surface of the wood is often covered in texture. This texture might be paint or sand mixed with polyurethane. This makes the wall feel rough like real stone. Some walls even have bulges or deep cracks built into them.
