She was born there on April 15, 1938. Her father, Francesco, was a railway worker from Sicily. Her mother, Yolande, was also of Sicilian descent. Cardinale grew up in a multilingual environment. She spoke French, Tunisian Arabic, and Sicilian. Interestingly, she did not learn Italian until she began her acting career. In 1957, she won a competition called "Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia." The prize was a trip to the Venice Film Festival. This event allowed film producers to discover her talent.

Her early professional life was shaped by producer Franco Cristaldi.

Shortly after, she appeared in the successful comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street. In this film, she played Carmelita, a Sicilian girl. This role made her instantly recognizable to the public. Some newspapers even called her "la fidanzata d'Italia," or Italy's sweetheart.

Cardinale faced significant personal challenges during her rise to fame.

While working her early roles, she discovered she was pregnant. She had a difficult relationship with a Frenchman when she was 17. She decided to keep her child despite the pressure to do otherwise. To protect her career, she kept her pregnancy a secret from the public. She even traveled to London to give birth. Cristaldi managed her life through a strict, American-style contract. This contract gave him control over many details of her professional life. She lived with this secret for seven years, even from her son, Patrick.

As she matured, Cardinale became a highly respected dramatic actress.
