Clark Wissler was a man who studied people. He was born in Indiana in 1870. He studied psychology first. This is the study of how minds work. He earned a doctor degree from Columbia University.

Later, he changed his focus. He became an anthropologist. Anthropologists study human cultures and history. Wissler worked at the American Museum of Natural History. He was a leader there for many years. He also taught at Yale University.

Wissler traveled to study Native American groups. He studied the Dakota and the Blackfoot. He wanted to compare different cultures. He created the idea of a culture area. This means groups in one area share many traits. He thought things like climate and food shape culture.

He also used math to study history. He used a math formula to link objects to places. This helped people find where tools came from.

However, Wissler held some wrong ideas. He believed in racial theories that were not true. He thought some groups were better than others. These ideas were part of scientific racism. This was unfair and wrong. Wissler died in 1947.
