Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote a famous piece for the clarinet.

He finished it in October 1791. This was one of his last big works. Some people call it his swan song.

Mozart wrote this music for his friend, Anton Stadler. Stadler was a great player. He helped make a special instrument. It is called a basset clarinet.

This instrument can play much lower notes than a standard clarinet.

The music has three parts, or movements. The first part is fast and bright. The second part is slow and sings like a voice. The last part is a fast rondo. In this part, the clarinet and the orchestra talk to each other. Sometimes they seem to compete!

The original paper with Mozart's writing is lost. It might have been stolen or lost by Stadler. Because of this, people had to change the notes for regular clarinets. Today, makers build new basset clarinets. Musicians use them to play the music just as Mozart intended. It is still a very popular piece to hear.
