Civil society is often called the "third sector" of our world. It is the space that is not part of the government or a business. This area includes families and private groups where people live their lives. Some people see it as a collection of groups that work for the people. Others think it is the set of freedoms, like free speech, that make a democracy work. It is a way for people to act together outside of official state power.

These groups work in many different ways to help people. They act as a meeting place for people who share the same goals. By joining these groups, people can learn more about how their government works. This knowledge helps them make better choices when they vote. These organizations can also put pressure on leaders to change laws. They help balance the power of the state so one group does not have too much control.

People have thought about these ideas for a very long time. The Greek thinker Aristotle spoke about a community that works for the common good. Later, Roman writers used the idea of a republic to describe how people live together. In the 1900s, thinkers in Eastern Europe used the term to describe groups that stood up to powerful regimes. For example, people like Václav Havel used it to talk about civic groups. These groups were important for people living under Communist rule.

Many researchers have studied how these groups affect a country. Robert Putnam argued that these groups build something called "social capital." This means they build trust and shared values between neighbors. In Italy, his studies showed that people in these groups were more involved in politics. However, things did not always go well. In Germany, many small groups formed during a hard economic time. The Nazi Party used these existing networks to gain power. In 1928, they only had 2.63% of the vote, but they became the largest party by 1932.

Today, civil society is still a big part of how countries work. In the United States, many people believe these groups help keep individual freedoms safe. Some experts say they act as a bridge between the government and the citizens. However, there are still many different ideas about their role. Some people worry that groups focusing on only one issue might distract voters. Others think that very large groups are better than small movements. It remains a very important part of how we live together.
