Civil death is a legal term. It means a person loses their rights. This can happen after a crime. It can also happen because of a government act.

In medieval Europe, laws were very strict. Felons lost almost all their rights. Some people were called "free as a bird." This meant they were outside the law. People could harm them without being punished.

In the United States, some people call losing the right to vote a form of civil death. This happens to some felons. Laws in New York and Rhode Island still use this idea.

China also has a version of this. It is called the deprivation of political rights. This means a person loses certain rights. They cannot vote or run for office. They also cannot lead state groups or companies. For most people, this lasts one to five years. However, people with life sentences lose these rights for life. The loss of rights usually starts after prison ends.
