City centre

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A city centre is the heart of a city. It is often called the urban core. This area is where many important things happen all at once. You might find shops, fun places for entertainment, and big buildings for politics there.

Many cities have their most historic parts in the centre. Because these areas were often the first parts of a city to be settled, people sometimes call them the "old town."

The centre is a place where culture and commerce meet.

People use different names for this area depending on where they live. In the United States, most people say "downtown." Some cities like Philadelphia use the term "Center City."

In Australia, people often say "Central Business District" or "CBD." In Canada, people use both "city centre" and "downtown" to mean the same thing. In South Africa, people might simply call the centre "town." Each name helps people know which part of the city they are visiting.

A city centre is not always the same as a Central Business District. The CBD focuses mostly on money and business power. However, a city centre includes history, culture, and politics too.

For example, the district of La Défense is the CBD for Paris. But La Défense is not the actual city centre of Paris. In many older cities, these two areas might overlap a little bit. In other places, they might be completely separate from each other.

Different landscapes change how a city centre looks and works. In Jerusalem, the centre is very dense and busy. It sits on a central ridge-line to help people gather in one spot.

This is helpful because the hilly ground makes walking between other areas hard. In contrast, Tel Aviv has a design where things are spread out more evenly. This makes it easy for people to walk or bike to shops. In Haifa, the business district sits on flat land by the sea. This area is called the "Lower City."

Cities in China show how centres can change over time. In Beijing, the historical centre is defined by old city walls. This area is still the heart of politics and culture. However, the Beijing CBD is located in the Chaoyang District to the east. Shanghai is also a great example of this change. Its old centre was near the Huangpu River. Now, the modern financial district is in a new area called Lujiazui. These changes show how cities grow and move over many years.
