It focuses on refining, marketing, and transporting oil products. The company has existed as its own name since 1983. Before this, it was part of a larger group called Cities Service. Today, the company is headquartered in the Energy Corridor area of Houston. Most of the company is owned by PDVSA, which is a state-owned company from Venezuela.

This ownership has changed recently due to new rules from the U.S. government.

Citgo works through a system of refining and moving fuel. The company takes oil and turns it into products like gasoline. It then uses a network of stations to sell these fuels to people. This is often called the downstream part of the oil business. This means the company handles the final steps of getting fuel to customers.

It uses large plants to make these important energy products. One such plant was built near Lake Charles, Louisiana, a long time ago.

The roots of the company go back to the early 1900s. An oil entrepreneur named Henry Latham Doherty started the original business. In 1910, he created the Cities Service Gas Development Company in West Virginia. His company built a huge pipeline to move natural gas. This pipe was 1,000 miles long and ran from Amarillo, Texas, to Chicago.

The company also found huge oil fields in Kansas and Oklahoma. They even sponsored musical radio shows for many years.

Many changes happened to the company over the decades. In 1935, a law forced the company to choose between utilities or oil. They chose to stay in the oil and gas business. In 1965, the company started using the Citgo brand name.

Later, in 1982, a big change occurred when Occidental Petroleum took over Cities Service. This led to the birth of Citgo Petroleum Corporation in 1983. The company was sold to the Southland Corporation, which owns 7-Eleven.

You might recognize Citgo from the bright signs at gas stations.

Many people see the green, expanding circle logo on the road. The company has faced hard times recently due to economic issues in Venezuela. In 2019, U.S. sanctions meant Citgo could no longer send money to its owners. This has made the company's future a topic of much discussion. Even so, it remains a familiar part of the American landscape.
