However, he was promoted again just three months later. He became the deputy commander of the IX Corps. This role involved commanding United Nations forces during many offensives. Eventually, he commanded the ROK II Corps until the war ended. He retired from the military in 1957.
After the military, Chung became a famous diplomat. He served as South Korea's ambassador to Turkey. He also served as the ambassador to France. From 1960 to 1963, he represented his country in the United States. During this time, he studied at Oxford and Harvard. He studied political science and international relations at these universities. These studies helped him prepare for his highest political roles. He became the Foreign Minister from 1963 to 1964.
Chung's political influence continued for many years. He served as Prime Minister for six years, from 1964 to 1970. Later, he was a member of the National Assembly for three terms. He also served as the chairman of the ninth National Assembly. In 1991, he began receiving treatment for lymph cancer in Hawaii. He died in Hawaii on January 17, 1994. He received a state funeral in honor of his service. He was buried at the Seoul National Cemetery.
