Chronic condition

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some sicknesses last a long time. We call these chronic conditions. A condition is chronic if it lasts more than three months. Some may even last a whole life.

This is different from an acute condition. An acute condition only lasts a few days or weeks. Chronic conditions can change over time. A person might have remission, which means they feel well. They might also have a relapse. This is when symptoms come back.

Many chronic diseases do not spread between people. These are called non-communicable diseases. However, some are caused by germs, like HIV/AIDS. Common types include asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.

Doctors can help people manage these health issues. Some illnesses used to be terminal. A terminal illness is one that ends a person's life. Now, new medicines help people live longer with some of these conditions.

Staying healthy can help prevent some diseases. Eating good food and being active are great ways to help. In the United States, about 40% of adults have two or more chronic conditions. This is called multimorbidity.
