Christoph Waltz is a highly acclaimed Austrian and German actor.

He is widely recognized for his skill in portraying complex supporting roles and villains. His performances in English-language films have earned him significant international fame. Waltz has received several of the highest honors in the film industry. These include two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, and two Golden Globes. He also earned a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award. His career spans theater, television, and major international cinema.

Waltz's approach to acting is built on deep study and analysis. As a youth, he was deeply passionate about opera. He attended the opera twice a week and even studied singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Eventually, he decided to pivot toward acting. He studied at the renowned Max Reinhardt Seminar. Later, he traveled to New York City to train with Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. From Adler, he learned the art of script interpretation. This training helped him develop a very analytical method for his performances.

His professional journey began with a long period of work in Europe. He made his stage debut at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. He also performed in major cities like Vienna, Salzburg, Cologne, and Hamburg. From 1980 to 2000, he was a prolific actor in German television. During this time, he also explored directing, making his debut with the production Wenn man sich traut in 2000. He eventually transitioned from German-language productions to global film stardom.

The turning point in his career occurred in 2009. He starred in Quentin Tarantino's film Inglourious Basterds. In this movie, he played Hans Landa, a character described as clever and multilingual but also murderous. Tarantino admitted he feared the role might be unplayable. However, Waltz's performance earned him the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

That same year, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also swept many critics' awards, including those from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Waltz followed this success with another major role in 2012. He appeared in Django Unchained, directed by Tarantino. For this film, he played a bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz. Tarantino wrote this specific role specifically for Waltz. Even after a pelvis injury during training, Waltz completed the role. This performance earned him a second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for this part.

Since his breakthrough, Waltz has appeared in many diverse projects. He has played the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the James Bond films Spectre and No Time to Die.

He has also starred in films like Big Eyes, Alita: Battle Angel, and The French Dispatch. His work extends to directing opera productions, such as Der Rosenkavalier and Falstaff. In 2024, he received an Icon award at the Newport Beach Film Festival. He is also set to appear in the series Only Murders in the Building.

Waltz's life is shaped by a rich theatrical heritage and multiple nationalities. He was born in Vienna to a set designer and a costume designer. His family included several stage and silent film actors. Because of his background, he holds citizenship in Austria and Germany. In 2020, he also became a naturalized American citizen. He currently divides his time between Berlin, Vienna, and Los Angeles. This international lifestyle reflects his global career in the arts.
