People often call her the "grande dame of Indonesian cinema." This means she is a respected and important leader in her field. She was born on December 25, 1956, in Jambi. Her family has roots in many different places like Aceh and the Middle East. Growing up with such a mixed background made her wonder about her own identity. She did not plan to act when she was young. Instead, she wanted to study to be an architect or a psychologist.

Her journey into acting started by chance in 1973. A director named Teguh Karya saw her pictures in a magazine. He asked her to be in his film, Cinta Pertama. At first, she only modeled to help a friend. She felt it would be impolite to say no to him. After the movie finished, she won a Citra Award for Best Actress. This big prize helped her decide to stay in acting. Later, she worked in the film Kawin Lari to learn even more. She wanted to see life through her characters' eyes.

Hakim has worked on many important films over many years. In 1988, she played a leader named Cut Nyak Dhien. This role was very hard but also a huge honor. The movie even won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival. She also acted in the Hollywood movie Eat Pray Love in 2010. In that film, she played a woman named Wayan. She had to learn her lines very quickly in Bali. She even met the real person her character was based on.

She does much more than just act in front of cameras. Hakim also works as a film producer. She helped make movies like Daun di Atas Bantal and Pasir Berbisik. Making movies can be a hard job with many steps. Once, she tried to save money by sending film to the lab all at once. A camera fault ruined all the footage, so she had to reshoot everything. She also makes documentaries to tell true stories. She has made films about UNESCO World Heritage Sites and autism.

Today, Hakim uses her fame to help people in many ways. Since 2008, she has been a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO. She works to help children get a better education. She also helps people understand autism through her foundation. She even traveled to Aceh to help after the 2004 tsunami. She believes every child has a right to go to school. Her life shows how one person can use art to change the world.
