He ruled from 1912 until 1947. He was also the King of Iceland for a few years. This happened because of a special union between the two lands. Christian belonged to the House of Glücksburg. This was a branch of the older House of Oldenburg. His family was very important in Europe. He had many royal cousins. One was King George V of the United Kingdom. Another was Emperor Nicholas II of Russia.

Christian grew up in many beautiful palaces. He lived at the Charlottenlund Palace near Copenhagen. He also stayed at the Amalienborg Palace complex. His mother, Louise, raised him herself. This was different from how most royal children lived. She gave him a very strict upbringing. It focused on duty, care, and order. Christian studied very hard at home. In 1889, he passed a big university exam. He was the first royal to do this. After school, he joined the military to learn how to be an officer.

As a young man, Christian fell in love. He met Duchess Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1897. They got married in a beautiful place called Cannes in 1898. They had two sons together. Their son, Frederik, eventually became King Frederick IX. Christian was a man who cared a lot about royal power. This led to a big problem in 1920. It was called the Easter Crisis. He disagreed with the elected leaders of Denmark. He dismissed them and picked his own leaders instead.

The Easter Crisis caused a lot of trouble. Many people in Denmark became very angry. They held large protests and strikes. The people felt the King was acting unfairly. This moment changed how the monarchy worked. Christian had to accept a smaller role. He learned he could not rule against the will of the parliament. This helped Denmark move toward a more modern way of governing. He also saw big changes in voting. In 1915, women and servants gained the right to vote.

He was also the King of Iceland, known as Kristján X. This happened because of a personal union between Denmark and independent Iceland from 1918 to 1944. He belonged to the House of Glücksburg, which is a branch of the House of Oldenburg. His family connections were vast and reached across Europe. His cousins included King George V of the United Kingdom and Emperor Nicholas II of Russia.

His life spanned two world wars and significant changes in how Denmark was governed.

Christian was born on 26 September 1870 at Charlottenlund Palace. This palace sits on the shores of the Øresund Strait near Copenhagen. He was the first child of Crown Prince Frederick and Louise of Sweden. His upbringing was quite unique for a royal of that time. Most royal children were raised by governesses, but his mother raised him herself. She provided a strict education centered on duty, care, and order. In 1889, Christian became the first member of the Danish royal family to pass the examen artium. This is the university entrance examination in Denmark. Following this, he pursued a military education and served with the 5th Dragoon Regiment.

In 1897, Christian met Duchess Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in Cannes. They married in 1898 and she became his queen consort.

The couple had two sons, including Prince Frederik, who later became King Frederick IX. Christian's personal views on leadership were often strong. He believed deeply in royal dignity and the power of the monarchy. This perspective would eventually lead to a major political conflict known as the Easter Crisis in 1920. He preferred a more authoritarian style of rule than the growing democratic movement in Denmark.

The Easter Crisis began because of a disagreement over the region of Schleswig. After World War I, two plebiscites, or public votes, were held to decide the fate of the area. In Northern Schleswig, 75 percent of the people voted to rejoin Denmark. In Central Schleswig, 80 percent voted to remain with Germany. The Danish Prime Minister, Carl Theodor Zahle, wanted to follow these results. However, Christian X wanted to include the city of Flensburg in the reunification. When Zahle refused the King's order, he resigned.

Christian then dismissed the entire cabinet and installed his own leaders.

This move caused a massive reaction across the country. The people organized mass demonstrations and a general strike led by the Social Democrats. The situation became so tense that the monarchy itself faced the risk of being overthrown. To save the institution, Christian X had to make a major concession. He accepted that a monarch could not keep a government in power against the will of parliament. This moment solidified the principle of parliamentarianism in Denmark. It changed the King's role into a more symbolic head of state. This shift allowed Denmark to continue moving toward a modern democracy.

During the Second World War, Germany occupied Denmark.

This was a period of great tension for the nation. During this time, Christian X became a powerful symbol of Danish resistance. He was famous for riding his horse through the streets of Copenhagen every day. Notably, he did this without any guards to protect him. This simple act made him a very popular figure among the Danish people. He represented national sentiment and strength during a very difficult occupation. His popularity during the war made him one of the most loved Danish monarchs of the modern era.

While he was a hero in Denmark, his reputation was different in Iceland. Between 1918 and 1944, he held the title of King of Iceland. However, the Icelandic people felt the Danish government failed them during the German occupation. They saw the Danish surrender as an abandonment of their defensive relationship. Because of this, Christian became very unpopular in Iceland. This dissatisfaction contributed to Iceland making a major change. The country eventually moved away from the union and became the modern Republic of Iceland. His reign thus marked the end of an era for both nations.
