In the beginning, Christianity spread through the Roman Empire. It started as a small group in the Levant.

Over time, the faith grew into a large community. This growth happened in two main stages. First, the apostles organized the early Church. Later, a structure of bishops emerged to lead urban populations.

These bishops acted as overseers for the people. This period helped shape how the religion worked across different lands.

Significant changes happened during the 4th century. Emperor Constantine the Great played a huge role here. He issued the Edict of Milan in AD 313 to allow religious freedom.

Later, the First Council of Nicaea met in AD 325. Emperor Theodosius I then made Nicene Christianity the official state church in AD 380. These events helped create a system where the church and government were closely linked. Some historians say that while Christ founded the faith, Constantine founded Christendom.

As time passed, the Christian world divided into different branches. In 1054, the Great Schism split the community into two main parts. One part was Western Christianity, which was centered in Rome.

Later, in the 16th century, a third branch called Protestantism emerged. This created a more complex map of different Christian groups across the world.

Christendom has left a lasting mark on human history. It helped shape the identity of the Western world and Europe.
