This site sat at the meeting point of three major rivers. It was likely one of the richest eel fisheries in the country.

British colonial settlement began in the mid-nineteenth century. The Canterbury Association chartered the 'First Four Ships' to bring settlers. These ships arrived at Lyttelton Harbour in 1850. The settlers were known as the Canterbury Pilgrims. They wanted to build a city modeled after English towns. They specifically looked to Christ Church in Oxford for inspiration. The name Christchurch was officially adopted in 1848. Some early colonists preferred the name Lyttelton instead. However, the name Christchurch was kept to distinguish the settlement from the port.
