Many people live here. The city of Christchurch is the main center. It is the second-largest urban area in New Zealand. Most people in the region live in Christchurch. Other towns include Timaru and Ashburton.

Nature has shaped this land over a long time. Rain, snow, and ice grind against the rocks. This creates large gravel fans that spread from the mountains.

Canterbury has also faced hard times. Large earthquakes hit the region in 2010 and 2011. These quakes caused much damage to buildings. Many people had to leave their homes. In Christchurch, a new building called the Cardboard Cathedral was opened to help.

The land changes as you move from the coast to the high peaks.

Nature built this landscape over a very long time. It all began with the creation of greywacke rocks. These rocks make up the Southern Alps. The land is part of a large continent called Zealandia. This continent sits on the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates.

Rain, snow, and ice grind against the rocks. This process creates large gravel fans that spread from the mountains. Sometimes, volcanoes also push through the rocks to reach the surface.

People have lived in Canterbury for many centuries. Māori peoples lived here long before European settlers arrived. One group, the Ngāi Tahu, occupied the area in the early 1800s. Later, two men named Edward Gibbon Wakefield and John Robert Godley started the Canterbury Association. They wanted to build a new colony.

In December 1850, 750 settlers arrived on four ships. They landed at Lyttelton to start their new lives.

Life in Canterbury changed as the economy grew. Sheep farming became very important on the wide tussock plains.

By the 1860s, there were three million sheep in the region. The area also faced very difficult times due to earthquakes. In September 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit the area.

Today, many people call Canterbury home. About 651,027 people lived here in 2023. Most of these people live in Christchurch. Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island. Other busy towns include Timaru, Ashburton, Rangiora, and Rolleston. After the big earthquakes, new buildings were made to help the community.

The Canterbury Region is a large administrative area in New Zealand. It is located on the central-eastern part of the South Island.

Covering 45,346 square kilometers, it is the largest region in the country by area. The region spans from the Conway River in the north to the Waitaki River in the south. To the west, the Southern Alps form a massive natural boundary.

The region is divided into several distinct parts. These include North Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, and Christchurch City.

The physical landscape formed through complex geological processes over billions of years. Canterbury sits on the continent of Zealandia. This continent is positioned on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates.

Constructive tectonic forces at this boundary helped build the land. The Southern Alps are made of greywacke basement rocks. Erosive forces also shape the terrain. Rain, snow, and ice grind against the mountains to create large gravel fans. Volcanism has also occurred, where magma pushes through the rock and sediment to reach the surface.

Human history in the region involves several distinct eras. For centuries, various Māori peoples inhabited the land. By the early 19th century, the Ngāi Tahu people occupied the area. This followed periods of warfare involving Te Rauparaha and his Ngāti Toa group. In 1848, Edward Gibbon Wakefield and John Robert Godley formed the Canterbury Association. Their goal was to establish an Anglican colony.

In December 1850, the first major wave of 750 settlers arrived at Lyttelton in four ships.

The economy of the region evolved significantly after European settlement. The wide tussock plains were ideal for extensive sheep farming. This industry became a major economic driver. In the early 1850s, there were over 500,000 sheep in the region. By the 1860s, the population of sheep had grown to three million. During this era of growth, the architect Benjamin Mountfort designed many buildings in the Gothic Revival style. This style is still visible in the region's historic civic and religious architecture.

In recent years, the region has faced significant geological challenges. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck on 4 September 2010. The epicentre was west of Christchurch at a depth of 10 kilometers. This event caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including sewers and power lines. The New Zealand Treasury estimated insurance costs at up to $11 billion.

A much more violent aftershock occurred on 22 February 2011. This magnitude 6.3 earthquake was very shallow, with a depth of only 5 kilometers. It caused 181 deaths and severely damaged landmarks like the Christchurch Cathedral.

Following these disasters, the region showed great resilience. In June 2011, further earthquakes occurred, including a magnitude 6.3 event. These caused issues like liquefaction in eastern Christchurch. Many buildings required demolition to ensure safety. To support the community, new structures were built. One notable example is the Cardboard Cathedral, which opened in August 2013.

Today, Canterbury is a major population center. As of the 2023 census, the population was 651,027 people. This represents an 8.6% increase since 2018. Christchurch is the regional seat and the second-largest urban area in New Zealand. The population is diverse, with 80.3% identifying as European and 10.6% as Māori. Many residents also come from Asian and Pasifika backgrounds. The region continues to grow, with many people moving to areas like Timaru, Ashburton, Rangiora, and Rolleston.
