Born on August 11, 1983, in Melbourne, Victoria, he has a diverse family background. His mother, Leonie, is an English teacher, and his father, Craig, is a social-services counsellor. Hemsworth's ancestry includes English, Scottish, and German roots on his paternal side. His maternal line includes Dutch and Irish descent. He grew up between the urban environment of Melbourne and the rugged Outback in Bulman, Northern Territory. He recalls vivid childhood memories of seeing buffalo and crocodiles in the Northern Territory. His two brothers, Luke and Liam, have also pursued careers as actors.

Hemsworth's professional journey began with various roles in television series. In 2002, he appeared in the fantasy series Guinevere Jones as King Arthur. He also had small parts in the shows Neighbours and Marshall Law. His major television breakthrough came in 2004 when he joined the Australian soap opera Home and Away. Although he initially auditioned for the role of Robbie Hunter, he was cast as Kim Hyde instead. He appeared in 171 episodes of the series before leaving in July 2007. Later, he competed on the fifth season of Dancing with the Stars Australia. This appearance was a significant risk for his career.

Marvel producers initially feared that his participation in a dance competition might discourage fans from seeing him as a serious superhero.

His transition to Hollywood involved several notable film roles. In 2009, he played George Kirk in the film Star Trek. This role was originally offered to actor Matt Damon, who declined the part. Hemsworth's performance in this film was highly praised by critics. Shortly after, he filmed the horror-comedy The Cabin in the Woods, which was released in 2012. He also starred in the film Snow White and the Huntsman that same year. In 2013, he appeared in the biographical sports drama Rush. In this film, he portrayed the Formula 1 World Champion James Hunt. His performance in Rush earned him critical acclaim for his mastery of the script.

Hemsworth achieved global superstardom through his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was cast as the superhero Thor in 2011. To prepare for this physically demanding role, he gained 20 pounds of muscle. The first Thor film was a major success, grossing US$449.3 million worldwide. He reprised the role in several sequels, including Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. He also appeared in major ensemble films like The Avengers and Avengers: Endgame. The 2012 film The Avengers was a massive commercial success, grossing over US$1.5 billion.

These roles established him as one of the highest-paid actors in the world.

Throughout his career, Hemsworth has explored many different genres of film. He has performed in action movies such as Red Dawn, Blackhat, and the Extraction series. He also appeared in the comedy Ghostbusters in 2016. In 2024, he starred in the action film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This role earned him a nomination for an AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also provided the voice for the character Optimus Prime in the animated film Transformers One. His versatility allows him to move between intense action, comedy, and voice acting.

While many of his films have been successful, some have faced challenges. The film Red Dawn was a box office disappointment, earning only US$50 million against a US$65 million budget. The thriller Blackhat also received poor reviews from critics. Hemsworth later admitted he did not enjoy his performance in that film. He felt the role did not suit his acting style. Additionally, the film In the Heart of the Sea was a commercial disappointment. To prepare for the role of a starving sailor, the cast followed a strict diet of 500 to 600 calories a day. These experiences show the varying levels of success and difficulty in a professional acting career.

Hemsworth's impact on the film industry is reflected in numerous awards and recognitions. He has won a People's Choice Award for Favorite Action Movie Actor. He also received a Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Movie Actor. His work in the Marvel films has been noted for both its commercial power and his personal charisma. Critics have compared his screen presence to that of classic actors like Cary Grant.
