In the 1970s, Burden became known for bold acts. He wanted to test the limits of art. For one piece, he stayed in a locker for five days. In another, he was shot in the arm. He also lay on a car with nails in his hands. These acts were often quite dangerous. He even spent twenty-two days lying on a platform without food.

Later, Burden made very large works. He built a fast car called the B-Car. He also made a tiny city using 5,000 war toys. He made 625 cardboard models of submarines. These hung from the ceiling like a school of fish. He also made a large machine called Metropolis II. Burden's art was meant to make people think and wonder.
