Choux pastry

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Choux pastry is a special kind of dough.

It uses four main things. These are butter, water, flour, and eggs. Most breads use a raising agent to grow. Choux pastry is different. It uses steam to puff up.

First, cooks boil the water and butter. Then they add the flour. They cook the mix for a few minutes. This helps the starch in the flour gel. Next, they let it cool. Finally, they add eggs to make it smooth. This dough is used in many places. In France, people make long éclairs. They also make cream puffs and profiteroles. Some people fry the dough to make beignets. In Spain, people make churros. They dip these fried treats in hot chocolate.

You can also find small, round treats called chouquettes. These are bite-sized and covered in pearl sugar. They are hollow inside. People often eat them for breakfast or a snack. Choux pastry can even be used for savory foods. Some people make cheese puffs called gougères with it.
