Symptoms can start two hours to five days after you are exposed. The main sign is watery diarrhea. It can look like cloudy rice water. This happens because of a cholera toxin. This toxin is a protein that makes the body let out water and salt. Losing too much fluid leads to dehydration. This can make skin look wrinkled or eyes look sunken.

Doctors can treat cholera with oral rehydration salts. These are sweet and salty drinks that replace lost fluids. In very bad cases, doctors use medicine through a tube in the skin.

Vaccines taken by mouth can also help protect people. Staying clean and using safe water are the best ways to stay well.
