It is known as a drop cookie because the dough is dropped onto a pan. These cookies are very popular in the United States. They can feel many different ways depending on how they are made. Some cookies are thin and crispy. Other cookies are thick, moist, and chewy.

People love them because they combine sweet dough with bits of chocolate.

Making these cookies involves a specific way of working with ingredients. Many bakers use a method called creaming. This means they whip sugar and a soft fat together until the mixture is light.

Next, they add eggs one at a time to keep the dough consistent. This step helps the cookies stay chewy and prevents them from spreading too much. Then, they mix in dry ingredients like flour and salt. Finally, they fold in chocolate chips or even nuts. The flour helps the cookie set as it bakes in the oven.

Long before the modern cookie, people ate something called jumbles.

Jumbles were popular in the late 1800s. They were unshaped cookies that sometimes used grated chocolate. By the 1870s, chocolate jumbles became a distinct type of treat. In the early 1900s, some recipes called them "Chocolate Drops." These earlier versions were a step toward the chocolate chip cookies we know today.

Most people credit Ruth Graves Wakefield with inventing the modern recipe.

Today, chocolate chip cookies are everywhere. You can find them in many different forms. Some companies like Famous Amos and Mrs. Fields made them very popular. You can even find chocolate chip cookie dough flavor in ice cream.

Some people even make ice cream sandwiches using these cookies. Whether they are crispy or soft, they remain a favorite snack for many people.
