Chlothar II, often called "the Young," was a significant king of the Franks. He ruled from approximately 584 to 629. His reign covered several major territories including Neustria, Burgundy, and Austrasia.

Chlothar II is important because he helped reunite the Frankish lands. He lived during a period of great division and constant conflict. His actions changed how the Frankish kingdoms were governed for generations.

The political landscape of the sixth century was very complex. After the death of King Clovis in 511, the Frankish kingdom was split into four parts. Later, in 561, the sons of Clothar I split the land again. This created different kingdoms like Austrasia and Neustria.

Chlothar II inherited only a small portion of this divided territory. He spent much of his life working to expand his borders and bring these pieces together.

Chlothar's early life was marked by secrecy and danger. His father was King Chilperic I and his mother was Queen Fredegund. Because of political unrest, Chilperic and Fredegund raised him in secret. He lived at a royal villa in Vitry-en-Artois to protect him from enemies.

After his father was killed in 584, his mother ruled as regent. She formed an alliance with his uncle, King Guntram of Burgundy, to protect his throne.

A major part of Chlothar's reign was a long and violent feud. This conflict was with Queen Brunhilda, a powerful leader from the rival kingdom. The struggle lasted for many years and involved many battles.

Even as a young child, Chlothar was involved in military matters. In 593, at only nine years old, he appeared at the head of his army. This occurred during the Battle of Droizy, where his forces defeated the invading Duke Wintrio. Eventually, in 613, Chlothar won a decisive battle that led to the execution of Brunhilda. This victory allowed him to unite Francia under a single rule.

Chlothar II also made lasting changes to the way the government functioned. In 614, a document known as the Edict of Paris was established. This edict addressed how officials were appointed and how the kingdom was administered.

In 617, he made a very important change to the role of the Mayor of the Palace. He decreed that this position would be held for life. Originally, the Mayor of the Palace was just a manager of the royal household. However, Chlothar's change helped this office grow into the effective head of government. This shift eventually led to the rise of new dynasties in the future.

Despite the many wars, Chlothar II had some unique personal habits for a Merovingian king. He practiced monogamy, which means he only had one wife at a time. Because some of his wives died young, he had three wives during his life.

He was also known as an ally of the church. His reign was generally seen as lacking the extreme acts of murder found in other royal families of that time, with the exception of the conflict with Brunhilda.

The legacy of Chlothar II is tied to the transition of power in Europe. While he reunited the Frankish lands, his reign also saw royal power slowly move toward the nobility and the church. In 623, he ceded rule over Austrasia to his son, Dagobert I.

Chlothar II died on October 18, 629. He left behind a kingdom that was much more unified than the one he had inherited as an infant.
