Chinese law

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

China has one of the oldest legal traditions in the world. The word for law in old Chinese is fǎ. This word means fair, straight, or just. Long ago, two big ideas shaped how people followed rules. One idea was Confucianism. This idea says people are naturally good. It teaches that people should follow customs and be kind. This helps a society stay calm and happy.

Another idea was Legalism. This idea focused on written laws and punishments. Leaders used these rules to control large lands. A different term, xíng, was used for criminal laws. In the past, xíng focused on punishments for crimes.

As time passed, the rules changed many times. During the Qing dynasty, China used a detailed code. Later, the Republic of China used laws from Europe. In 1949, the People's Republic of China began. This brought a new system of socialist law. In 1982, a new constitution was made. It says no person is above the law. Today, China uses many different ways to make laws.
