Chernihiv Oblast has faced many difficult times in its history. During World War II, Germany occupied the province from 1941 to 1943. More recently, it was one of the first places where fighting happened in 2022. Russian and Ukrainian forces clashed in the region during that invasion. The governor stated that mines were left in many areas after the military left. Even after the fighting moved, the border areas have faced shelling. The province also deals with many unmanned aerial vehicles in the sky. Despite these hard times, the region remains a very important part of Ukraine.

It covers a total area of approximately 31,900 km². The region is located within the historic areas of Polissia and Left-bank Ukraine. To the west, it borders the Kyiv Reservoir of the Dnieper River and Kyiv Oblast. Interestingly, the city of Slavutych is an enclave within Chernihiv Oblast, though it officially belongs to Kyiv Oblast. This city was created for people following the Chernobyl disaster. The northern borders of the province touch Belarus and the Russian Bryansk Oblast. To the east lies Sumy Oblast, and to the south is Poltava Oblast.

The geography of the region is defined by the Desna River. This major river bisects the oblast into northern and southern sections. The Desna eventually flows into the Dnieper River just north of the Kyiv city limits.

The province is divided into several administrative parts. Since July 2020, it has been subdivided into five raions, or districts. These are the Chernihiv, Koriukivka, Nizhyn, Novhorod-Siverskyi, and Pryluky raions. The local administration is managed by the Chernihiv Oblast Rada. The governor is appointed by the President of Ukraine and serves as the speaker of the Rada.

History in this region stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological excavations show that the capital city, Chernihiv, has had human settlements for over 2,000 years. During the Kievan Rus' period, Chernihiv was a vital historical center. It was the second most important Ukrainian city during that era. The cities of Chernihiv and Novhorod-Siverskyi were frequently mentioned in historical records. Over the centuries, many different powers have ruled this land. These include the Kievan Rus', the Mongol Empire, Lithuania, Poland, and Russia.

Other important locations include the Yeletsky Monastery and the Trinity Monastery. In Nizhyn, a historical Cossack city, there is also a university. The region contains several palaces, such as the Kachanivka Palace and the Sokyryntsi Palace. These sites reflect the deep religious and social history of the province.

The economy of Chernihiv Oblast relies on several different industries. It is a center for petroleum and natural gas extraction. The region also focuses on machinery, electronics, and the textile industry. Tobacco production is significant, with a major factory located in Pryluky.

Additionally, the city of Chernihiv is home to a brewery that produces "Chernihivske" beer.

Demographics in the province have changed significantly over time. The population is estimated at around 976,701 people as of 2021. This represents a 37% decline from the 1959 population of 1,554,000. This is the steepest population decline of any oblast in Ukraine. Consequently, the province has the lowest population density in the country. According to the 2001 census, 93.5% of the population were ethnic Ukrainians. Russian speakers made up 5.0% of the population at that time.

Language plays a central role in the identity of the region. Ukrainian is the only official language in the oblast. In 2001, over 89% of the population spoke Ukrainian as their native language. While Russian was more common in some northern border villages, the trend has shifted toward Ukrainian. Since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, the education system has undergone "Ukrainization." This process replaced the Russification that occurred during the Soviet era. By the 2023-2024 school year, all 89,872 secondary students studied in Ukrainian classes. Recent data shows that 76.2% of social media posts from the region are in Ukrainian.

Chernihiv Oblast has also faced modern periods of intense conflict. During World War II, Germany occupied the province from 1941 to 1943. More recently, the region was a primary site of clashes during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Following the departure of Russian military forces in April 2022, Governor Vyacheslav Chaus reported that mines were left in many areas. The province continues to deal with the effects of war, including shelling of border communities. The region also experiences frequent activity involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Despite these challenges, the province remains a key part of the Ukrainian landscape.
