Chemical safety

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Many things we use are made of chemicals. We find them in homes, labs, and big factories. Some chemicals are helpful, but others can be dangerous. They might catch fire or explode. Some can even cause burns on your skin.

Chemical safety is the way we stay safe around these things. It includes rules for making, moving, and using chemicals. We want to protect people and the Earth. Some chemicals can hurt the air or the ocean. For example, some chemicals can stay in the bodies of animals for a long time.

People use special tools to stay safe. We call this PPE, or personal protective equipment. This includes things like safety goggles and gloves.

These tools help stop chemicals from touching your eyes or skin.

We also use signs to show danger. In the U.S., many use an NFPA diamond. This is a label with four colors. Red shows if it catches fire. Blue shows health risks. Yellow shows how it reacts. White shows other special hazards. These signs help everyone know the risks.
