Chemical equation

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Scientists use a special way to write down changes. This is called a chemical equation. It uses symbols to show how substances mix and change.

A chemical equation has two main sides. The left side lists the reactants. These are the starting substances. The right side lists the products. These are the new things made by the change. An arrow points from the reactants to the products. This arrow shows the direction of the change.

We use plus signs to separate different substances. We also use numbers called coefficients. These numbers tell us how many units of a substance are used. If no number is written, it means there is one.

Sometimes we add small signs in parentheses. These show if a substance is a solid, a liquid, or a gas. We must also balance the equation. This means we need the same number of atoms on both sides. This happens because elements do not change during the reaction. We can balance them by trial and error. We can also use math to find the right numbers.
