The cheetah is a very fast cat.

The cheetah is the fastest land animal. It can run at very high speeds.

Cheetahs live in places like Africa and Iran. They like grassy lands called savannahs. They also live in deserts and mountains. Most cheetahs live in small groups. Females often live with their cubs. Males might live in small groups called coalitions.

The cheetah is a very special kind of large cat. It is the fastest animal living on land today.

To catch food, the cheetah uses a very specific way of working. First, it stalks its prey and gets very close. It likes to hunt medium-sized animals like impala or gazelles.
People have known about cheetahs for a very long time. Scientists first described the cheetah in the late 1700s. A man named Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber gave it its first scientific name in 1777. Later, Joshua Brookes suggested the name Acinonyx in 1828.

There are four different types of cheetahs living in the world today. Most live in Africa, but some live in central Iran.

Cheetahs are part of a group of cats called the Puma lineage. This group includes other animals like the cougar and the jaguarundi. Even though they look like other cats, they are unique. For example, some cheetahs have a rare look called a king cheetah. These have large, blotchy spots and wide stripes.
The cheetah, known scientifically as Acinonyx jubatus, is a large feline species. It is famous for being the fastest land animal on Earth. This predator has evolved a body specifically designed for high-speed pursuits. It possesses long limbs and powerful muscles in its hindlimbs. A highly flexible spine also allows for incredible movement. Its fur is typically tawny, creamy white, or pale buff. This coat is covered in evenly spaced, solid black spots.
To catch prey, the cheetah follows a very specific hunting process. It first stalks its target to get as close as possible. Most cheetahs prefer medium-sized ungulates, which are hoofed animals. These include species like impala, springbok, and Thomson's gazelles.
Cheetahs live in different social structures depending on their sex. Females and their cubs live together in groups. Males can live in groups called "coalitions," or they may live as solitary individuals.
There are four recognized subspecies of cheetah living today. The Southeast African cheetah is the most common, with nearly 4,000 individuals in places like South Africa and Namibia.

Scientific study of the cheetah has a long history. Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber first described the species in 1777. He originally named it Felis jubatus. In 1828, Joshua Brookes proposed the genus name Acinonyx. This name likely comes from Greek words meaning "immobile nails." This refers to the fact that cheetahs have claws they cannot fully retract.
Conservation is a major concern for this species. The global population was estimated at only 6,517 individuals in 2021. Because of this, the IUCN Red List classifies them as Vulnerable.
The cheetah belongs to the Puma lineage of felids. This lineage also includes the cougar and the jaguarundi.
