Cheating happens when someone breaks rules to get an unfair advantage.

People try to do this without being noticed. They might use bribery or show unfair favoritism to certain people. Sometimes the rules are written down clearly. Other times, people follow unwritten rules about what is right or wrong. In some places, people who cheat are called "cheats" or "cheaters." This behavior can happen in many different parts of life.

In schools, cheating is a very common problem.

A professor named Donald McCabe studied this in 2005. He looked at students in the United States for his report. He found that 95% of students admitted to some form of cheating. This included copying homework or peeking at a test. In his study of 4,500 high school students, 74% said they cheated on tests. Many students also used new technology to help them cheat. They might use digital players for notes or calculators that store formulas.

Sports also have many rules to keep things fair.

Some athletes use banned drugs to get more strength. This is often called "doping." In 2012, an investigation found that cyclist Lance Armstrong used these drugs. Other athletes might use the wrong equipment to win. For example, some baseball players use bats made with cork inside. In football, some players use a sticky spray called "stickum" on their hands.

Even coaches can cheat by using bribery to get new players.

Cheating can even happen in the way games are judged. In the 2002 Winter Olympics, a scandal happened in figure skating. A Russian team was given a gold medal because of a judging deal. This was not fair to the Canadian team. Because of this, the Canadian team eventually received the gold medal instead. The International Skating Union had to change the judging system after this event. This shows how one unfair act can change the rules for everyone. It helps make sure future games are played more honestly.

Video games have their own ways of cheating too.

Some players use secret codes to unlock special items. Others find "bugs," which are mistakes in the game's code. A player might use a bug to make an enemy get stuck. This lets the player win without any risk. In multiplayer games, cheating is seen as very bad. It ruins the fun for all the other players. Most games have rules that say you cannot buy items from outside sources. Following the rules keeps the game fun and fair for everyone.
