He was best known for his long-running program, *Charlie Rose*. This show aired on PBS and Bloomberg LP from 1991 to 2017. The program was famous for its distinguished stature and intellectual tone. Rose used his platform to host deep conversations with many different people. He interviewed writers, politicians, athletes, and entertainers. He also spoke with scientists, businesspersons, and global leaders.

Rose had a specific method for conducting his interviews. He looked for guests who were spontaneous, authentic, and passionate. He believed a good interviewee should want to express their ideas. He also wanted guests who were ready to have their ideas tested. This approach helped create a space for serious discussion. In 1994, the show moved to a Bloomberg LP studio. This move allowed for high-definition video through satellite-remote interviews. This technology let him talk to guests from many different locations.

His career featured many different roles across major networks. He worked as the anchor of *CBS News Nightwatch* from 1984 to 1990. This was the first late-night news broadcast for CBS. He also served as a correspondent for *60 Minutes*. In 2012, he became a co-anchor for *CBS This Morning*. He worked there alongside Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell. He even hosted a revived version of the classic program *Person to Person*. This show allowed him to interview celebrities in their own homes.

Rose's early life shaped his path toward journalism. He was born on January 5, 1942, in Henderson, North Carolina. His parents, Margaret and Charles Peete Rose Sr., were tobacco farmers. They owned a country store where Rose lived as a child. He began helping with the family business at age seven. Rose attended Duke University to study history. He graduated in 1964 and later earned a J.D. from the Duke University School of Law in 1968. An internship in a Senator's office helped spark his interest in politics.

Throughout his career, Rose interviewed many significant historical figures.

He spoke with business leaders like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. He even interviewed world leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad. His interview with the Syrian president earned him a Peabody Award.

Rose received several prestigious awards for his work. He won a Peabody Award in 1976 for a conversation with Jimmy Carter. He also won an Emmy Award for his interview with Charles Manson. In 2014, he received the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum. This prize recognized his insightful conversations about urban development. He was also granted honorary doctorates from several universities.

However, many of these honors were later rescinded following misconduct allegations.

In November 2017, Rose's career changed due to serious allegations. *The Washington Post* published reports of sexual misconduct involving Rose. These reports covered incidents from the late 1990s to 2011. As a result, Rose was fired from PBS, Bloomberg, and CBS. He responded by admitting to behaving insensitively at times. In November 2024, a sexual harassment lawsuit ended in a settlement. The plaintiffs in that case acknowledged there was no ill intent from Rose. Since 2022, he has hosted interviews on his own website called *Charlie Rose Conversations*.

Beyond news, Rose had a presence in popular culture. He made cameo appearances in television shows like *Breaking Bad* and *House of Cards*. He also appeared as himself in various films.
