Charles Spearman was a famous thinker from England.

He spent his life studying how the human mind works. He was a pioneer in the field of psychology. He also used math to help explain his ideas. This mix of science and math made his work very special. He wanted to find the rules that guide how we think. His discoveries helped change how scientists study human ability today.

Spearman looked for patterns in how people solve different problems. He noticed that people who score high on one test often score high on others. Because of this, he believed there was one main skill behind all mental tasks. He called this the "g factor," which stands for general intelligence. He also thought people had "special intelligence" for specific tasks. Later, he even suggested that this general ability was made of two different parts. He called these "eductive" ability and "reproductive" ability.

Spearman had a very interesting path to becoming a scientist. He did not start out studying the mind. Instead, he joined the army as an officer of engineers in 1883. He served for fifteen years and became a captain in 1897. After leaving the army, he went to Leipzig to study. He wanted to use the scientific method to study psychology. He worked with famous teachers like Wilhelm Wundt and Felix Krueger.

His work with numbers was just as important as his work with the mind. He helped create a tool called factor analysis. This is a way to find links between many different measurements at once. He also developed something called rank correlation in 1904. This helped scientists see how things relate to each other. He even created a way to fix errors in data in 1907. These math tools are still used in many types of research today.

Spearman lived much of his life in London. He worked at University College London for a very long time. He stayed there from the time he arrived until he retired in 1931. He was even elected to the Royal Society in 1924. Spearman believed that every person is a genius at something. He felt that we just need better ways to find those talents.
