Sir Charles Lyell was a famous scientist from Scotland.

He studied geology. This is the study of the Earth and its rocks. Lyell had a big idea about how our world works. He believed the Earth was shaped by slow changes. These changes happen through natural ways we can see today.

He called this idea uniformitarianism. This means the same rules that shape the Earth now have always worked. For example, he thought volcanoes and earthquakes shaped the land over a very long time. He wrote a famous book called Principles of Geology. This book helped people understand "deep time." This means the Earth is much older than many people thought.

Lyell was also a close friend of Charles Darwin. He helped Darwin think about how life changes. Lyell even helped Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace share their work on how species change. Many places in the world are named after him. You can find Mount Lyell in the USA. There are even craters on the Moon and Mars named for him.
