Charles Le Brun was a very important French artist during the 1600s.

He was a painter, a teacher, and a leader of art schools. King Louis XIV loved his work very much. The king even called him the greatest French artist of all time. Le Brun did not just paint pictures on canvas. He helped decide how all art in France should look. His style became a famous way of making art called the Louis XIV style. This style lasted for many years after he died.

Le Brun had a very busy way of working. He often led a large group of artists in a workshop. These artists helped him finish huge projects like palace ceilings.

He also ran the Gobelins factory. This place made many things like furniture and tapestries for royal palaces. He was a master of planning every small detail. He even helped start the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648. This school helped artists learn how to create a national style for France.

His journey as an artist began when he was very young.

At age eleven, he started training in a studio in Paris. By the time he was fifteen, he was already getting jobs from important leaders. In 1642, he traveled to Rome to study more. While in Rome, he looked at old Roman statues and paintings. He spent four years there learning from other great masters. He returned to Paris in 1646 to find many new people to work for.

Le Brun worked on some of the most famous buildings in the world.

He thought a painting was like a book you could read. He studied how people show feelings on their faces. He called these feelings "passions." He wrote a book about this in 1698 after he died. He believed facial expressions could show what a person's soul was like. This idea helped many artists for the next two hundred years. Today, people still visit museums to see his amazing work.
