A caricaturist is an artist who makes funny or exaggerated drawings. Charb used his art to share big ideas and opinions. He was a member of the magazine Charlie Hebdo. He joined the team in 1992. By 2009, he became the director of publication. This means he helped lead the whole magazine. He was an atheist and a pacifist. He believed in the importance of free expression for everyone.

Charb created many different types of drawings and stories. He made a famous comic strip called Maurice et Patapon. This series featured a dog named Maurice and a cat named Patapon. Maurice was a dog who was a pacifist and outgoing. Patapon was a cat who was described as conservative and violent. Charb also drew a character named Marcel Keuf, le flic. This was a character for a magazine called Fluide Glacial. He even worked as a set cartoonist on a television show on the M6 channel.

Charb's talent for art began when he was very young. He was born in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine on August 21, 1967. His parents were Michel Charbonnier and Denise Renée-Marie Charbonnier. His father worked as a technician for the post and telephone service. His mother worked as a secretary. Charb's talent for drawing was found while he was in school. He published his very first drawings when he was only fourteen years old. He continued to draw while he studied at Lycée Camille Pissarro.

Because of his art, Charb faced many serious dangers. He drew cartoons that some people found very upsetting. This included drawings about the prophet Muhammad. In 2011, the Charlie Hebdo office was firebombed. Because of these threats, Charb lived under police protection. He lived with a bodyguard named Franck Brinsolaro. In 2013, the group Al-Qaeda put Charb on a most-wanted list. Even with these risks, Charb said he would rather die on his feet than live on his knees.

On January 7, 2015, a tragic event changed everything. Two gunmen stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris. Charb was killed along with seven of his co-workers. Two police officers and two other people also died that day.
