A chakra is a meditation aid used in various Hindu and Buddhist tantric practices. It is viewed as a psychospiritual energy center located within the subtle body. This subtle body is a non-physical dimension that exists alongside the physical body. While the physical body is made of mass, the subtle body consists of energy. Practitioners use these centers to explore the connections between the mind and the body.

The mechanism of the chakra system involves a network of energy channels called nadis. These channels connect various nodes of psychic energy. Three classical nadis are known as Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna. The central channel, Sushumna, is considered the most important in the Kṣurikā-Upaniṣhad. Life energy, or prana, flows through these nadis and chakras. In many traditions, a dormant energy resides near the lowest chakra. This energy is called Kundalini in Hindu texts and Candali or Tummo in Buddhist traditions. As a practitioner breathes or meditates, this energy can pierce the chakras to move upward.

Different traditions categorize chakras into various types and numbers. Medieval Buddhist texts from the 8th century CE mention only four or five chakras. Some Buddhist tantric sources identify the manipura (navel), anahata (heart), vishuddha (throat), and ushnisha kamala (crown). Other Buddhist lineages use a five-chakra system. These are linked to elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and space. In contrast, Hindu texts like the Kubjikāmata expanded the list significantly. The most famous modern variant describes seven chakras. This seven-chakra model was popularized by Sir John Woodroffe in his 1919 book, The Serpent Power.

The history of the term chakra begins with ancient linguistic roots. The word is an Indic reflex of the Indo-European *kʷékʷlos, meaning "wheel" or "cycle." In the earliest Vedic texts, the term had literal or metaphorical uses. It appeared in phrases like the "wheel of time" or the "wheel of dharma." Some scholars, such as David Gordon White, suggest chakra iconography may come from the five symbols of the yajna, or Vedic fire altar. These symbols include a square, circle, triangle, half moon, and dumpling.

In terms of significance, the subtle body is believed to be essential for health. The belief holds that the body and mind mutually affect each other. The prana within the subtle body is what vanishes when a person dies. Some theories suggest the subtle body network is incredibly vast, containing as many as 88,000 chakras. In Tibetan Buddhism, chakras are central to the soteriological process, which refers to the path of liberation. The precise use of chakras is considered vital to the efficacy of Tibetan Buddhist practice.

Meditation on chakras involves many specific symbolic correspondences. Each chakra may be mapped to a seed syllable, known as a bija. They are also associated with specific colors, sounds, and subtle elements called tanmatra. For example, in some Buddhist systems, the heart chakra is linked to the element of fire and the Buddha Akshobhya. Practitioners often use mandalas or images of deities to aid their focus. They might start with external models and move toward internal, abstract realizations.

Chakras connect to many broader fields of study and belief. Modern Western Occultism began viewing them as actual esoteric energy centers in the 1880s. This movement was led by H. P. Blavatsky and the Theosophists. Later, people added connections to alchemy, astrology, and gemstones. Other systems like Kabbalah and Tarot divination have also been linked to chakra concepts. This shows how an ancient concept of inner energy continues to influence many different ways of thinking about the world.
