Chain mail is a special type of armor made of small metal rings. These rings are linked together in a pattern to create a flexible mesh.

People often call a full coat of this armor a hauberk or a byrnie. This mesh was very important for protection in the past. It allowed a person to move easily while staying safe. Today, we still use this idea for different jobs.

Butchers use mail gloves to stay safe from sharp tools. Some people even wear shark-resistant suits to protect against bites.

Making chain mail is a very careful process. Small metal rings are connected to one another to form a sheet. This sheet can be shaped into many different items. For example, a hood made of mail is called a coif. Leggings made from the mesh are called chausses.

You can even have a mail collar hanging from a helmet called an aventail. Some armorers even layered mail between pieces of fabric to make a jazerant.

History tells us that mail has been around for a very long time. Many people believe the Celts invented it. However, some examples of pattern mail date back to the 4th century BC from the Etruscans.

The Romans saw this armor when they fought the Gauls. They eventually adopted it for their own troops as the lorica hamata.

Mail was a very expensive thing to own. It took a lot of time and hard work to make. Because it was so valuable, it was often stolen from fallen soldiers.

Both men and women worked as armorers to make these pieces. For example, Alice la Haubergere worked in Cheapside in the 1300s. Agnes Hecche also made mail after inheriting her father's tools.

As time went on, new kinds of armor were created. Plate armor became popular because it protected better against heavy hits.
