He lived during a time called the Enlightenment. This was an era when people used reason to study the world. Beccaria was a man of many talents. He was a lawyer, a philosopher, and an economist. People often call him the father of modern criminal law. His ideas helped change how governments treat people accused of crimes. He wanted justice to be fair for everyone.

Beccaria believed that punishment should serve a specific purpose. He did not think punishment should be about getting revenge. Instead, he believed in a way of thinking called utility. This means punishment should create the greatest happiness for the most people. He argued that the goal is to stop crime from happening again. This is often called deterrence. To work well, he said punishment must happen quickly after a crime. If the link between the crime and the punishment is strong, people will learn better.

Beccaria grew up in Milan and studied hard. He was born on March 15, 1738. He went to a Jesuit college in Parma for his early school years. Later, he graduated from the University of Pavia in 1758. At first, he was very good at mathematics. After reading the work of Montesquieu, he moved toward economics. He joined a group of friends called the Academy of Fists. This group met to talk about making the justice system better. They were part of a movement to reform society through deep thought.

In 1764, Beccaria published his most famous book. It was titled *On Crimes and Punishments*.

He was a bit afraid of the government at first. Because of this, he published the book without his name on it. The book argued against many things that were common back then. He spoke against the use of torture to get confessions. He also spoke against the death penalty. He believed laws should be clear and simple. He also thought judges should not have too much power to make up their own rules.

His ideas traveled very far across the world. Many leaders read his work and used his ideas. Catherine the Great in Russia endorsed his writing. In the United States, the Founding Fathers were very interested. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both used his ideas.

He even suggested that better education could help stop crime before it starts. Today, we still use many of his principles in our legal systems. His work helped move the world toward a more rational way of handling justice.
