These animals were called ceratopsians. They lived a long time ago. They lived in North America, Asia, and Europe.

Most of these dinosaurs ate plants. They had a beak like a parrot. This beak helped them eat.

Another scientist, Edward Drinker Cope, found the remains of Agathaumas. He named it "marvellous forest-dweller."

In 1872, Fielding Bradford Meek found giant bones in Wyoming. These discoveries helped us understand how these dinosaurs lived. Many species were only known from their teeth at first.

The edges of these frills often featured epoccipital bones. These are dermal bones that begin as separate pieces. They fuse to the frill as the animal grows. These bones were likely ornamental rather than functional. They may have helped different species recognize one another. The shape of these bones varied between groups. Centrosaurines, like Centrosaurus, had elliptical bones with narrow bases. Chasmosaurines, like Triceratops, had triangular bones with wide bases. In some species, these bones became long spikes or hooks.

The history of studying ceratopsians involves many famous paleontologists. In 1872, Fielding Bradford Meek found giant bones in Wyoming. He alerted Edward Drinker Cope, who named the species Agathaumas sylvestris. This name means "marvellous forest-dweller."

Later, Othniel Charles Marsh described Ceratops and Triceratops. In 1890, Marsh named the order Ceratopsia. He identified specific traits like the rostral bone and two-rooted teeth. This led Cope to realize that many different fossils belonged to one group. This work helped scientists organize the complex history of these animals.

Ceratopsians varied greatly in size and scale. They ranged from small animals to giants over 9 meters long.

Because their skulls are so sturdy, they are the most commonly preserved parts of their skeletons. This allows scientists to study ontogeny, which is how an animal grows from an embryo to an adult. Researchers have used complete growth series from species like Protoceratops to understand these changes.

While many reconstructions show them with semi-sprawling forelimbs, some argue later species had upright limbs. This detail helps us understand how they moved through their environments.

Today, scientists use complex systems to classify these dinosaurs. They use a method called clade-based phylogenetic taxonomy. One major group is Neoceratopsia, which includes most well-known species. Within this, Coronosauria shows the first development of the neck frill. This group also includes the family Ceratopsidae. This family is split into two subfamilies: Centrosaurinae and Chasmosaurinae. The last ceratopsian species, Triceratops prorsus, went extinct during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Their study continues to connect our understanding of dinosaur evolution and biology.
