Cells in your body can change into different types. This is called cellular differentiation. It is the way a stem cell turns into a special cell.

Cell Differentiation

Stem cells are very important. They can divide to make many kinds of cells. Some stem cells are totipotent. These can make every kind of cell in a body. Other stem cells are pluripotent. They can make almost any cell type in an adult.

As cells change, they look different. They may change their size or shape. They also change how they use power. This happens because of gene expression. This is when a cell uses its instructions to work. The instructions do not change. Only how the cell uses them changes.

Cells also talk to each other. They use growth factors to send signals. A signal tells a cell to start changing. This helps cells grow into skin, bone, or muscle. In some animals, cells can even change back. This is called dedifferentiation. It helps some creatures fix their bodies.
